The Radisson Blu hotel in Galway opened its doors to the poker loving public on Thursday afternoon as the BoylePoker rolled into town. At 3:00pm, the tournament director issued the order to shuffle up and deal in the €230 buy-in IPO Galway Main Event and some 14 levels later play was done and dusted for the night.
The registration desk exchanged the money of 108 players for tournament chips before they finally closed, which is a great start considering (1) Day 1a was on a Thursday afternoon and (2) there are still two starting flights left to play.
Of the 108 entries, only 23 managed to progress to Sunday’s Day 2. One man who did more than progress – he ended the night as the overall chip leader – was Joe Quinn who bagged up 311,000 chips! Quinn was already sat behind a decent stack of chips when his got there against the of 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event finalist Andy Black to send Black to the rail and his own stack skywards.
Quinn then sent Ciaran Cooney into the cold Galway night prompting the BoylePoker.com Blog to describe Quinn as “the Terminator!”
Other big stacks include David Masters (306,100), Petras Stulpinas (294,400), Patrick Connelly (268,100) and Vincent O’Toole (253,800).
