Alli Mallu Tops the GPS Star City Main Event Chip Counts
The 2014 Genting Poker Series (GPS) Star City Main Event is in full swing with two of its three starting flights completed. Thursday saw 186 entries taken for the first of two live start days and 47 of those managed to complete 10 hour-long levels with their chip stack intact.
Sat at the top of the chip counts after the conclusion of Day 1b is Ali Mallu and his 296,000 stack. Mallu is a regular on the UK poker scene and has career winnings of $880,000. In 2003, Mallu finished as runner-up to Norway’s Torstein Iversen in the £2,525 European Poker Championships held at “The Vic” for a career-best tournament cash of £78,100.
Finishing Day 1 as the chip leader does not guarantee victory in any tournament, but Mallu will now be confident of a deep run in Birmingham after bagging up almost 10 times his starting stack.
Plenty of talented and established players join Mallu through to Day 2 including J. Mik (269,500), UKIPT Nottingham Six-Max champion Ben Mayhew (234,800), Basharad “Bash” Mahmood (196,300), former GPS Sheffield winner Hasmukh Khodiyara (145,500), the 2013 GPS Star City champion Julian Thew (136,000), Sunny Chattha (92,000), Wahid “Wadey” Ashraf (89,500), and Mike “Da Bookie” Hill (55,400).

The third and final flight begins at 1:00pm on Friday and continues until 10 hour-long levels are completed. Players can register and re-enter up to the end of Level 9, so we would expect to see lots of Day 1b bustees such as Paul “ActionJack” Jackson, Chaz Chattha, Tom Hall, Simon Deadman, Alex Goulder, Barry Neville, Leon Campbell, Micky “The Worm” Wernick, Praz Bansi and Ben Jackson to take advantage of the re-entry format.
