Scotland’s Ludovic Geilich has put himself in a great position to add a European Poker Tour trophy to the UKIPT title he already owns after a superb performance at the PokerStars-branded felt in the EPT Deauville Main Event.
Geilich bagged up 142,000 chips at the end of eight 75-minute levels to find his name fifth in the Day 1b standings, but top of the more prestigious – if slightly unofficial – UK & Ireland leader board. You may recall that is was Geilich who won the first UKIPT held outside of our shores when he took down the Marbella Main Event, netting himself €130,000 in the process and, although there is a long way to go in this event, Geilich will be confident of another deep run in a major tournament.
Joining Geilich and the 24 British and Irish players who progressed from Day 1b is Andrew Sweeney and his 129,600 stack. Sweeney, ranked 14th in Ireland for both live and online tournament had a profitable day at the felt and is by far the best placed Irishman in the field.
Day 1b was the starting flight of choice for some of the UK’s big guns and while Team PokerStars Pros Jake Cody and Victoria Coren, in-form Simon Deadman, Praz Bansi and Jon Spinks failed to navigate their way through to Tuesday’s Day 2, the likes of James Mitchell, Stephen Chidwick, Mathew Frankland, Toby Lewis and JP Kelly did.

Topping the Day 1b field was Lebanon’s Ayman Zbib whose 181,400 chips mean he leads the tournament overall going into Day 2. France’s Alain Bauer starts Day 2 with 160,100 chips and is in second place at the start of play.
Day 2 kicks off at 12:00 noon CET and continues until another six 75-minute levels have been completed. Here’s to scores of our players still being in the hunt for the EPT Deauville title once the curtain comes down on what should be a high octane day of poker action.
