Jono “GAWA9” Crute Chops Sunday Warm-Up For $94.5K

Jono Crute

Belfast’s Jono Crute helped himself to the largest Sunday Major score of his fllow Britis and Irishmen – and women, of course – when he finished second in the PokerStars Sunday Warm-up, but not before negotiating a deal that saw him awarded $94,515.57.

Crute, playing on PokerStars from Canada using the moniker “GAWA9,” navigated his way through the shark infested waters of the Sunday Warm-Up, which this week attracted a bumper crowd of 3,628 players, to take his seat at the nine-handed final table. Here, he locked up a $5,804.80 payout for his efforts, but obviously was not happy with that and continued to grind away until he found himself heads-up with “Carster” of Canada.

En route to heads-up, Crute sent British pro Tom “Jabracada” Hall to the rail in fifth place when he set both blinds – Team PokerStars Pro Jose “nachobarbero” Barbero in the small and Hall in the big – all-in. Barbero folded Hall called with {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} and looked set to win the 7.2 million chip pot because Crute had made his move with the dominated {K-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}. The {7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop gifted Crute a flush draw, while the {Q-Clubs} turn meant Crute could no longer hit a ten to win and needed one of the eight remaining diamonds to avoid doubling Hall up. The {6-Diamonds} on the river completed Crute’s flush, busted Hall and sent Crute’s stack hurtling past the 20 million mark.

After the elimination of Barbero in fourth and the United Kingdom’s “flopkin51” in third place, Crute and Carster traded bets heads-up until Crute hit trip sixes to all but level the chip counts. At this stage, after 11 hours of play in total, Crute and Carster entered negotiations to split the remaining prize pool.

“Original numbers and I’ll buy the first pint and jagerbomb at wpt fallsview” typed Crute into the chatox and a couple of minutes later Crute agreed to take $94,515.37 and Carster $94,300 leaving $10,000 for the eventual champion.

That extra $10,000 is now nestled in the PokerStars account of Carster who on the final hand of this week’s Sunday Warm-Up saw his {A-Clubs}{3-Clubs} come from behind to beat Crute’s {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts} when the board ran out {9-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}.
