Former European Poker Tour London champion David Vamplew is in pole position in the UKIPT Edinburgh Main Event after turning his 20,000 starting stack into a tournament leading 146,200 over the course of eight hour-long levels on Day 1b.
According to the PokerStars Blog, Vamplew’s tournament was not exactly going to plan as he only had 14,000 chips at his disposal at the last break of the night, but went on a mini heater to find his name displayed at the top of the chip counts going into Saturday’s Day 2.
Day 1b saw 311 players turn up for the £1,100 buy-in event and among them were some of the game’s superstars. Players such as Full Tilt Poker Ambassador Sin Melin, Charles Chattha, Irishman Andy Black, Kevin Iacofano and Team PokerStars online Dale Philip and Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Coren all bought in but fell at various points of the day. Coren was especially unlucky, busting late on when her pocket jacks lost to her opponent’s pocket jacks when the board four-flushed.
Day 2 may not be graced with the presence of the aforementioned players, but there are still plenty of heroes and wizards among the 147 who survived Day 1b’s action. Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree (115,000), UKIPT Marbella winner Ludovic Geilich (96,500), Team PokerStars Online Mickey Petersen (69,500), Manig Loeser (67,300), Dave Shallow (62,900), Dara O’Kearney (44,700), Dermot Blain (44,500), Julian Thew (42,300), Martins Adeniya (42,000), Tim Finne (35,000), Sam Grafton (32,400), GUKPT Grand Final champion Kevin Allen (27,400), and Stephen O’Dwyer (9,600) a selection of the big names to look out for during Day 2.
At 12:00pm on Saturday, the 147 Day 1b survivors join with the 55 who made it through from the first starting flight to create a field of 202. Only 63 of these will leave Edinburgh with a slice of the £500,000 prize pool; a min-cash is worth £2,060 while the UKIPT Edinburgh champion secures a £93,900 payout.
Tune into UK & Ireland PokerNews on Sunday morning to discover if the money bubble burst and if Vamplew is still the man to catch going into Day 3.
