£300-400k Prize Pool Expected at GPS Nottingham

Dusk Till Dawn

The ever-popular Genting Poker Series (GPS) heads to the Dusk Till Dawn (DTD) casino in Nottingham on January 8 and everything is pointing towards it being the largest ever GPS Main Event in the history of the tour.

Now in its second season, the GPS has gone from strength-to-strength thanks to it offering a relatively low buy-in that does not compromise on the structure of the tournament. To date, the largest attendance of a £440 buy-in GPS Main Event stands at 584, which is the number of players turning out for the first leg of Season 2 at the Star City Casino in Birmingham. This massive crowd created a prize pool of £236,000 with Sky Poker’s Julian Thew walking away with £40,120 and the title after a four-way deal.

You can read more about Thew's victory here.

There is less than a week until the GPS descends on the DTD for the first time and owner Rob Yong is confident that the week-long festival will be a roaring success.

“I have had a bet with Simon Tomsett – the head of Genting Poker in London — at £5 per point over 750 entries (£300,000 prize pool),” said Yong in his most recent blog. “It would be a pleasurable experience to collect a few quid from a miser like him!”

UK & Ireland PokerNews spoke to Yong earlier this week and he informed us that there are already 350 players registered and plenty more are buying in on a daily basis. The guarantee of the £440-buy-in Main Event is £100,000 and that has already been smashed, with Yong quietly confident of hitting an almost unbelievable 1,000 runners.

Day 1a, the first of three starting flights, kicks off at 8:00 pm on Wednesday 8 January and is played online, with the live Day 1b starting at the earlier time of 1:00pm on January 9. The third and final start day takes place at 1:00pm on January 10 – also at DTD — and Yong warns that he expects a massive crowd on Day 1c so if you want to play on that particular day then you need to buy in as soon as possible.

“We can seat 500, I think if you only want to play Friday Day 1c and don’t want to risk being an alternate then please reserve your seat ASAP. It goes without saying we will move mountains to get everyone in should there be a mass turnout on Friday Day 1c,” said Yong.

With the main event looking set to break GPS records, the side events should also sport massive prize pools. Plus with a large number of grinders sunning themselves at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, the waters at the GPS Nottingham festival should be less shark infested than usual.
