Stephen Chidwick Climbs to the Top of the UK GPI Rankings

Stephen Chidwick

Stephen Chidwick's remarkable year concluded this week with two third place finishes in the Eureka Poker Tour Prague Main Event and the European Poker Tour Prague Main Event. Not only did the popular pro win over €470,000 he also accumulated enough points to see him climb to the top of the UK’s Global Poker Index rankings and win the UK’s Player of the Year title.

Chidwick climbs to number one in the UK and 37th in the worldwide rankings after those two fantastic performances in Prague. The points awarded to Chidwick for those Prague scores take his total to 2,305.02, which edges out Toby Lewis who had led for the best part of six months.

The man known as “stevie444” secured his first cash of 2013 when he finished 15th in the $2,700 APT Philippines Main Event, banking $7,700 in the process. Next for Chidwick was the 44th World Series of Poker where he excelled in every event he sat down in. Highlights of Chidwick’s WSOP include a sixth place finish in the $1,500 Omaha Hi/Low event ($43,120), a ninth place in the $2,500 No Limit Hold’em 4-handed event ($19,662) and a fourth place finish in the $25,000 No Limit Hold’em 6-Handed. ($353,780). Chidwick also managed to piece together a deep run in the $10,000 Main Event before falling in 479th – from 6,352 entrants – for $24,480.

The updated UK leader board sees David Vamplew, Matthew Ashton and Chris Moorman make up the top five spots with Niall Farrell, Max Silver, Zimnan Ziyard, Tamer Kamel and Tom Alner completing the top 10 spots.

Kamel is a newcomer to the top 10 and he thoroughly deserves his place among the UK’s elite. He may not put in as much volume as some of the bigger names, but when Kamel does play you can guarantee he will be a constant thorn in the side of his opponents and is a real pain to play again. Kamel’s recent 10th place finish in the EPT Prague €1,100 turbo and 19th place finish in the €5,300 Main Event were enough to boost his points tally enough to claim a top 10 berth.
