Mitch Johnson Tops Day 1a Field of UKIPT Nottingham Six-Max

Mitch Johnson

The UKIPT Nottingham Six-Max Main Event kicked off at the Dusk Till Dawn casino on Wednesday, the first time a UKIPT Main Event has been played to such a format. Although only 61 players turned out for the first of three starting flights, there were some stellar names among the entrants and the Nottingham-based club witnessed some superb poker.

One such star, Mitch Johnson, had a great day at the DTD felt and ended with 171,500 chips, enough to see him be the chip leader. Johnson, who is primarily a cash game player, won a huge pot towards the end of the eighth and final level of the night that saw Kyriacos “Greek Jack” Dionysiou bust.

Dionysiou opened from the button with {K-}{J-} and then called when Johnson, who was in the small blind, three-bet with {Q-}{7-}. All of the chips went flying into the middle on a {Q-}{10-}{3-} flop and Johnson’s hand held to see the near 100,000 chip pot get pushed to him.

Those last few hands of the night were also profitable for Adam Reynolds who boosted his stack to 93,100 and claimed the scalp of Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree to boot. Boeree opened from under the gun with {A-}{Q-Clubs}, Reynolds three-bet to 4,200 only to see Boeree respond with a four-bet all in for 18,500. Reynolds called, showed pocket queens, the queens held and Boeree was sent to the rail.

Other big stacks from Day 1A include David “LeKnave” Jones (92,300), Ben Vinson (82,700) and David Clifton-Burraway (75,800).

In addition to Boeree, some establish pros failed to make it through to Saturday’s Day 2 and will have to occupy themselves with one of the many side events if they are to leave Nottingham as winners. Alex Martin, Oliver Price, Ben Dobson, Marcin Milde, Jamie O’Connor, Richard Hawes and Julian Thew were some of the talented individuals who fell by the wayside during Day 1A’s proceedings.

Day 1B commences at 12:00 noon and continues until eight 60-minute levels are written into the history books. Join us here at UK & Ireland PokerNews on Friday morning to discover if Johnson still leads and which poker stars turned out for the second starting flight.
