Day 1b of the 2013 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Grand Final started slowly with a modest field of 80 in their seats as the £2,125 buy-in event kicked off. Late registration closed some six levels later and when it did there were a total of 206 buy-ins in the kitty, meaning the total attendance for this spectacular event stands at an impressive 294, with the prize pool £588,000 – way more than the £400,000 guarantee.
The final starting flight of any major live poker tournament is usually the start day of choice for the professional players and this tournament was no different. Anyone looking down the chip counts for their favourite player is greeted with a list of players who are the crème de la crème of the British poker scene – it is actually quite ridiculous and must be one of the toughest fields ever assembled in the UK.
Topping the Day 1b field was Mitch Johnson who is due a big live tournament score. Mitchell’s friends rib him about always min-cashing in tournaments but now that he has 227,600 chips they may be railing him to very end of this tournament.
Joining Mitchell at the top of the standings, and the only other player to finish with more than 200,000 chips, was Simon Deadman and his 201,000 stack. Deadman made the long journey to London from Leeds and was rewarded with a great day at The Vic’s felt. Deadman already has a GUKPT title to his name and would be a popular champion here.
Also in the top 10 of the chip counts are APAT World Champion and GUKPT Didsbury winner Eirimas Livonas (149,625), flamboyant Frenchman Nicholas Cardyn (134,750), EPT Loutraki and all-round good egg Zimnan Ziyard (134,725), Romania’s Tudor Purice (121,000), Sky Poker pro Ryan Spittles (111,000, Spain’s Ana Marquez (108,425) and the newly sponsored Ben Jackson (95,800). See, we told you the top 10 was ridiculous!
Further down the chip counts, yet still with more than a chance of leaving London with a huge score, are the likes of Scott “Aggro Santos” Margereson (88,200), former footballer Tony Cascarino (86,200), UKIPT Marbella champion Ludovich Geilich (82,500), student Ben Foxwell (75,625), Genting Poker Series regular Ellie Biessek (60,925), World Series of Poker bracelet winner Craig McCorkell (44,500), Luke “Bit2Easy” Reeves (42,650), Ben Vinson (35,350), and Luke Schwartz (30,000)!
Day 2 commences at 12:00 noon and if you can get down to the Grosvenor Victoria Casino on Edgware Road we would recommend it because you will get to see a plethora of poker talent on show. Keep your browsers locked to UK & Ireland PokerNews for the next few days as we recap the action of this star-studded event.
