Paul Denman Tops Day 1B GUKPT Luton Main Event; £262,000 to Play For
The G Casino in Luton witnessed another busy day of poker on Friday when Day 1b of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Luton Main Event took place. When the tournament director ordered his dealers to shuffle up and deal, there were 70 players in their seats. By the time the registration desk pulled its shutters down, 170 players – including 38 re-entries – had bought, bringing the total attendance to 262.
Again, as was the case on the first starting flight, the field was full of recognisable faces and stellar names, such is the draw of the Luton leg of the GUKPT. Carlo Citrone (124,700) had a better day at the felt after busting on Day 1a, while Joe Grech (117,775), Kirit Patel (108,250), Full Tilt Poker Ambassador Sin Melin (92,050) and Mark McCluskey (78,725) each had solid days at the felt.

John Eames (71,950), Karl Mahrenholz (68,175), Paul Zimbler (55,000), last season’s GUKPT Luton champion Jamie O’Connor (52,925), Sky Poker’s Ryan Spittles (51,950), Yucel Eminoglu, Richie Allen (24,500), Jerome Bradpiece (23,000) and Kevin Allen (19,625) are a selection of other well-known pros who made it through to Saturday’s Day 2 relatively unscathed.
Topping the Day 1b field was Paul Denman and his 146,900 stack. Some frantic internet searching for information on Denman turned up a complete blank, but he managed to turn his 20,000 starting stack into a more than seven times that, something that is not an easy task in such a star-studded tournament such as this.
Day 2 should be an amazing day of poker and we wish were in Luton to witness it. Take a look at who progressed from Day 1a in Friday’s recap and add them to the names mentioned in this piece and you can see why we are so excited about Day 2.
The tournament recommences at 12:00 noon and the plan is to whittled the crowd of around 90 players down to the finaal table – or as close to the last nine as possible. Tune into UK & Ireland PokerNews on Sunday to find out how close to that final table the tournament managed.
