John Ventre is the latest name to be written into the World Poker Tour (WPT) history books after he won the inaugural partypoker WPT National UK London Main Event held at Aspers Casino Westfield Stratford City.
There may have been weather warnings and storm alters going around London on Sunday, but that could have been the wind generated by the 13 players rushing to the casino for the start of the third and final day’s play.
It took four hours for the 13 surviving players to be whittled down to the nine that made up the final table. James Thomson, Ryan Kelly, Matas Cimbolas and Sami Yusuf the players who fell by the wayside before the final table was reached.

The final table progressed at a swift rate, taking only 2.5 hours to reduce the nine hopefuls to the heads-up duo. Pia Jeppesen was the first elimination, followed by Christopher Mantegna, Gergely Penzes, Erik Sund, Michael Chaffe, Martynas Vitkauskas and finally Timotheous Timotheou.
Ventre, a 37-year old Fund Manager from London, was in a dominant position going into the heads-up encounter with Mohammed Suhail and had increased his already sizable chip lead to one of 8.7 million to 1.51 million at the start of the final hand of the tournament.
On that final hand, Suhail opened from the button during the 250,000/500,000 blind level, Ventre responded with a three-bet, to which Suhail four-bet all in. Ventre snap-called and showed Ax], a much stronger hand than the of Suhail. By the river, the board read , which busted Suhail and left Ventre to win the £20,250 first place prize, the largest cash of his career to date.
The accumulator format was well received by the 335 players who bought in for a total of 510 entries. The WPT Tournament Manager Lee Johnston said of the tournament: “It’s been a great first stop of the new partypoker WPT National UK tour, to achieve 510 entries is fantastic. The feedback we have received from the players has been very positive, everyone has had such a great event experience; they’ve praised all the features that have made the event a success, which includes the accumulator concept, the hospitality in the partypoker lounge, the WPT players party and the great staff and support from Aspers Casino.
“For such a small outlay the players have a number of chances to create a stack to play for big money. It’s amazing how much of the field were recreational players that had won seats either through partypoker online or Aspers live satellites. For the vast majority of players this was their first major poker event. I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts throughout the weekend. Hope to see you all at our next stop in Milton Keynes 19 - 22 of December, 2013.’
The Head of Aspers Poker, John Scanlon echoed Johnston’s words: “A massive thank you to all the players that came to support and make the event a triumph for everyone involved. I have been planning an Accumulator event for a long time. However, it wasn’t until I sat down with WPT General Manager Neil Barrett that I believed Aspers had the right partner to move forward and make the event a success. To give players the opportunity to become a WPTN champion for just £200 is amazing. Congratulations to John Ventre our champion and it’s a nice bonus that our first winner is a regular cash player in the casino. Hope to see a sell out for the next event in Milton Keynes.”
