The PokerStars UKIPT is not only about £1,100 buy-in Main Events, it also recognises that grassroots poker is as important to those who play it, hence the creation of the £250+£25 UKIPT Series. There have been two winners of UKIPT Series events so far, one being Team PokerStars Pro Jake Cody and the other Gabriel Dragomir. Now Haresh Thaker is looking to add his name to that list after ending Day 1A as the tournament’s chip leader.
Day 1A of the UKIPT Series 3 saw 216 players pack into The Hippodrome Casino in Leicester Square, but only 68 of them managed to make it through a dozen 30-minute levels with their chip stacks intact. As mentioned, it was Thaker who bagged the most chips as the curtain came down on the day’s proceedings, 244,000 is the number displayed on his chip bag.
According to the PokerStars Blog, Thaker is a former poker dealer who used to work at the now defunct Fox Poker Club and has been playing poker professionally since being made redundant. Thaker looks to have a good record in London-based tournament with similar buy-ins to the UKIPT Series if his Hendon Mob page is anything to go by. Thaker has a third place finish in a £150 NO Limit Hold’em event, a win in a £350 Super Satellite to the 2011 GUKPT Grand Final and a second place in a £150 No Limit Hold’em Turbo event, all of which took place at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino. Will he be adding a UKIPT score to his resume?
Joining Thaker on Sunday’s Day 2 are players such as Neil Bernardout (160,000), Slovakia’s Peter Hegedus (131,000), Ashley Robert Wilson (125,900) and Lorenzo Biundo of Italy (121,300).
If you are looking for big names to root for, you will not find the aforementioned Cody and Dragomir, Paul Zimbler, Sam MacDonald or Deborah Worley-Roberts in the Day 2 field because each of them busted at various points of Day 1A.
The second and final starting flight opens its doors at 2 p.m on Saturday afternoon and an even larger crowd is expected to descend on The Hippodrome Casino. Tune into UK & Ireland PokerNews on Sunday for a recap of the action from Day 1B of the UKIPT Series 3.
