The UK’s Number One Player Sam Trickett Takes Down Old Trafford Tournament

Sam Trickett

British superstar Sam Trickett may have won more than $19,000,000 from major live poker tournaments and countless more millions playing in the biggest cash games round the world, but this weekend he took down a low buy-in event that probably ranks as his favourite victory of his glittering career.

Before finding poker, Trickett’s passion was playing football, the sport he lived and breathed. That was until two serious knee injuries left him with an agonising decision; keep playing football and risk serious consequences in later life, or give up the game he loved. Trickett followed his head and gave up the chance of a professional football career. The rest, as they say, is history.

Trickett is an avid Manchester United fan (we all have our crossed to bear – Ed) so when PartyPoker announced they would be running a live tournament at United’s Old Trafford home, Trickett jumped at the chance to compete. Despite the fact Trickett probably has socks costing more than the £250 buy-in, the East Retford-born star gave it his all after buying into the Road To Old Trafford Tournament.

A total of 169 players bought into the Old Trafford tournament, including former Manchester United stars Dwight Yorke, Bryan Robson, Norman Whiteside and Quinton Fortune. Unfortunately for them, Trickett was a man on a mission and he unsurprisingly bested the field and scooped the £10,000 first place prize.

“I am really happy to win this event,” said a delighted Trickett, “I played for fun but I felt I really had to win at Old Trafford – I made it my mission!”

Before the ten-handed final table started, Trickett and the other finalists were given a signed and personalised Manchester United shirt by Rio Ferdinand; Ferdinand was unable to play in the tournament as he was playing for Manchester United in his own testimonial match on Friday. Shortly after his win, Trickett made a substantial donation to Ferdinand’s “Live the Dream Foundation” charity.

“This has been a great fun weekend and so much different and more relaxing than any other tournament I have played,” said Trickett, “I am totally made up for winning at Old Trafford, it has been an amazing experience.” Road to Old Trafford Final Table Results
