The British poker scene is booming right now with major tournaments going off like fireworks on bonfire night. While the UK PokerNews Live Reporting team is in Ireland for the Full Tilt Poker UKIPT Galway festival, the editorial team has an ear on the ground and a finger on the pulse of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Bolton Main Event that kicks off today.
When the GUKPT last headed to Lancashire for its Bolton leg, a field of 114 players exchanged £550 for 20,000 tournament chips and the chance to become a GUKPT champion. It will be interesting to see how many players turnout this time with the aforementioned UKIPT Galway festival in full swing and the fact the Southend leg of the ever-popular Genting Poker Series starting on Sunday. That said, attendances for GUKPT Main Events have been excellent this year and PokerNews would not be surprised to see over 100 players buying in over the two starting days.
Last year, the GUKPT Bolton Main Event was played as a six-max tournament, whereas this year it is to be played as a traditional full ring event, albeit with the option to re-enter should you bust during Day 1a of Day 1b. Reverting back to full ring is, in our opinion, a good move because the short-handed format can sometimes put players off entering as they are not used to the format in the live poker arena.
If you are planning on heading to the G Casino in Bolton and are wondering how large the potential prizes are going to be, then let us point you in the direction of last year’s final table recap. As mentioned, 114-players bought into last year’s event, creating a prize pool of £57,000. The lion’s share of this went to the eventual champion, Ben “jenbizzle” Jones who walked away with £17,390 for his efforts.
Keep your browsers locked to UK & Ireland PokerNews over the next few days as we bring you recaps of the action from the GUKPT Bolton Main Event.
GUKPT Goliath Schedule Announced; Main Event Features a £200,000 Guaranteed Prize Pool!
The GUKPT Goliath returns to Coventry for the third consecutive year and looks set to be the largest and richest edition yet.
In 2012, a bumper crowd of 1,954 players bought in for £120 and after Grosvenor Casinos added £46,000 to it, there was £200,000 in the prize pool. This huge sum of money found its way into the top 290 finisher’s pockets, with Les Fenton – the 2012 GUKPT Goliath champion – taking home a whopping £35,800 and a seat to the GUKPT Champion of Champions Main Event worth £2,500.
Amazingly, Fenton went on to finish third in the Champions of Champions event, scooping an additional £10,220! It could be you who mirrors Fenton’s remarkable success.
The 2013 GUKPT Goliath Main Event runs from August 20 through to August 26 and features a massive £200,000 guaranteed prize pool, meaning the organisers are expecting 2,000 or more entrants! For your £100+£20, you will receive 25,000 chips and play to a 40-minute clock. You may also get to play against your friendly neighbourhood UK & Ireland PokerNews Editor because I plan on heading to the Midlands to win this baby!
In addition to the Main Event, there is plenty of side action taking place, tournaments with buy-ins ranging from £50+£6 up to £200+£20. Be there or be square!
