The Super Tuesday at PokerStars is one of the most eagerly anticipated weekly tournaments in the online poker world, one that the professional poker players love to play in and one that the poker community loves to rail from the virtual sidelines.
This week’s tournament attracted a field of 623 players, a much larger crowd than we have witnessed in recent weeks thanks in part to the World Series of Poker, who created a colossal prize pool of $623,000, of which $117,747 was set aside or the eventual champion. Once again, the final table was the home to a number of British and Irish players, proving beyond doubt that our countries have some of the best poker players in the world.
Seventy-two places were paid in the August 6 edition of this amazing weekly tournament, meaning nobody wanted to bust in 73rd place and burst the money bubble. Unfortunately, every poker tournament has a bubble and therefore a bubble boy, or girl. Denmark’s “TheGoldfish1” crashed out in 73rd place, paving the way for the likes of Jono “MONSTER_DONG” Karamalikis (72nd); Marc “Frenchdawg” Ladouceur (68th); Tom “hitthehole” Middleton (34th); and Morten “-MortenVM-“ Mortensen (28th) to win some cash for their considerable efforts on the night.
Final Table Reached
Almost nine hours of high-octane poker action was required to whittle the 623 starters down to the final table of nine. Once the dust had settled and the fist-pumps completed, the final nine lined up as follows:
|1||JMDA Y SALO||510,232|
|3||Andrey “andreasbar” Lobzhanidze||138,105|
|4||Jordan “JWPRODIGY” Westmorland||799,014|
|5||Dara “SlowDoke” OKearney||136,606|
|7||Toby “810ofclubs” Lewis||382,992|
According to the PokerStars Blog, only three hands took place before the final table lost its first player. Dara "SlowDoke" OKearney raised to 16,000 and the action passed all the way around to Russia’s Andrey “andreasbar” Lobzhanidze in the small blind. Lobzhanidze three-bet all in for 127,105 in total and once Jordan “JWPRODIGY” Westmorland folded in the big blind OKearney called. Lobzhanidze showed to the Irishman’s . Neither player improved on the board, OKearney’s jacks held and the tournament was reduced by one player.
Shortly after Lobzhanidze’s demise, the final table lost another player, the United Kingdom’s “jonstarz.” A min-raise to 18,000 from “steve3331” on the button was met with an all-in bet of 198,349 from jonstarz in the big blind and a quick call from steve3331. The latter made the call with and jonstarz’s black sixes were in one of tournament poker’s many coinflips. It was a coinflip jonstarz would ultimately lose as the flop catapulted Hungary’s steve3331 in front. And in front he stayed as the turn and river each saw a king land, good game jonstarz.
It did not take too much longer for the seven final table players to be reduced to six. With blinds now at 5,000/10,000, Portugal’s “vicenfish” set the price to play at 20,000 from his seat in the cutoff. Steve3331, fresh from claiming the scalp of jonstarz, called in the big blind looking for more blood. The flop looked innocuous enough, but that did not stop a check from steve3331, a 20,000 bet from vicefish, a check-raise to 48,885, a shove of 190,610 and a call taking place. Crazy! Vicenfish could only muster for a pair of eights, a hand much less strong than the of steve3331. Vicenfish could not find a third eight or an ace on the turn or river and became the seventh place finisher.
Toby Lewis Bows Out in Sixth Place
Next to go was the online superstar and former European Poker Tour Vilamoura champion, Toby Lewis. Lewis’ tournament life was in the balance with him holding against the of “JMDA Y SALO.” It would be a race that Lewis not only lost, but was completely destroyed in because JMDA Y SALO flopped a set and then improved to quads on the turn to send the British hero to the rail with $26,477.50 for his time.
After fulfilling the role of the short-stacked ninja for the best part of two hours, “Gmelkonyan” finally busted as the tournament entered its 11th hour. Down to less than 10,000 chips, Gmelkonyan committed his stack with a more than reasonable . Unfortunately for Gmelkonyan, Westmorland called with and was in front. By the river the board read , which left Westmorland’s king-high the best hand and resigned Gmelkonyan to fifth place money.
YMDA Y SALO became the fourth place finishers shortly after steve3331 crippled him. YMDA Y SALO saw steve3331 open the betting and took it upon himself the jam all in for 358,000 chips with . A large percentage of the time steve3331 would have folded and YMDA Y SALO would have picked up a decent pot without contest, however, steve3331 had opened the betting with and was going nowhere. The final board was void of drama and YMD Y SALO exited.
The final three players paused the tournament to discuss flattening the original pay structure based and agreed to leave $6,000 for the eventual winner and to split the remaining prize pool based on Independent Chip Modelling or ICM as it is abbreviated to. Fifteen minutes later and the tournament was completed and its champion crowned.
First, a preflop raising war broke out that resulted in steve3331 four-betting all in with what turned out to be and Westmorland calling with the superior . Steve3331 paired his king on the flop to soar into the lead, but was instantly shot down again when the appeared on the turn. The river failed to alter the path of the hand and the tournament progressed to the heads up stage.
Westmorland took a 2,401,112 to 713,888 lead into the one-on-one encounter, leaving OKearney needing all the luck of the Irish in order to turn the situation around. Four hand into the battle and it was all over.
Westmorland opened to 40,000 and OKearney called. OKearney, a former UKIPT Online Qualifier of the Year, called and then led for 54,400 on a flop. Westmorland raised to 124,444 only to see OKearney respond with an all-in bet of 1,031,726. Westmorland called.
OKearney turned over for an overpair, a flush draw and a gutshot straight draw, but Westmorland had him crushed with the . The turned did not help either player and when the landed on the turn Westmorland’s hand remained best and OKearney’s tournament ended.
