Julian Thew already holds the record for number of Grosvenor UK Poker Tour titles won with three, and he now has a chance to break his own record as he has reached the final table of the GUKPT Walsall Main Event.
Day 2 of the £550 GUKPT Walsall Main Event saw a flurry of early activity when 12 players busted during the first level of play. From then on, the eliminations were frequent and after slightly over nine hours of play, the final table was reached.
Leading the final eight players into battle is Tim Slater, who you may recall was the overnight chip leader on Day 1a — who says Day 1 chip leaders never win tournaments? Joining Slater are David Tighe, a player referring to themselves as Mr G, Charlie Denton, Gerard Haggerty, Charles Ihle, Mark Hester and the aforementioned Thew.
Thew goes into Sunday's finale fifth in chips and it would take a brave man or woman to bet against Thew adding to his already impressive haul of three GUKPT titles. Thew completed his hat-trick last season when he took down the Coventry Main Event, a venue that is only a short drive away from Walsall.
GUKPT Walsall End of Day 2 Chip Counts
Play in the GUKPT Walsall Main Event commences at 12:00 on Sunday and continues until a champion is crowned. Who will that champion be? Will it be Thew or is Slater's chip lead too commanding? Those questions will be answered shortly! Tune into UK & Ireland PokerNews on Monday for a full recap of the final table action.
