This weekend saw a bumper crowd descend on the Dusk Till Dawn venue in Nottingham where a £100 Summer Deepstack tournament ook place.
Despite the blistering heat, 461 players opted not to head to the coastal resorts or to their favourite beer garden and instead bought into the £100+£15 deepstacked event. These poker-loving people generated a prize pool of £46,100, which fell shy of the £50,000 guarantee so there was an overlay of £3,900 – not that the players minded!
The bubble burst on Sunday afternoon and when it did, each player who had chips in front of them locked up a payday of at least £300. The likes of Daniel Carter, Stuart Kinghorn, Renee Xie, Paul Zimbler, and Neil Raine each made it into the money places and when Mark Cullumbine busted in 10th place, the final table was set.
First to fall from the final table was Graham Cutler and he was followed out of the door by Jamie Powell, Ben Vinson, Alan Taddei, a player who wishes to remain anonymous, Abbie Richmond and Liam Kitchen; Kitchen’s exit left Peter Thorpe and Jonathan Gill to lock horns heads-up for the title and the £12,500 first place prize.
Thorpe, a Nottingham-based student, had to settle for second place once again in his career having done so on two previous occasion in APAT events, also at Dusk Till Dawn, This latest result banked Thorpe a career-best £7,000 and was made all the more impressive by the fact Thorpe finished 16th in a DTD £150 Deepstack event in May.
Gill is a familiar figure at DTD, having spent a couple of years there in the public relations team. Last June, Gill finished second in a £150 Deepstack event at DTD and was delighted to have gone one better this time around.
