The fifth leg of the 2013 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour took place yesterday at the G Casino, Reading on Rose Kiln Lane. What looked like being a very poor turnout, turned into a more respectable one, albeit one that was still low in terms of modern day tournaments.
Fifteen minutes before play was due to begin there were only nine players who had bought in for £550 and the event started with just 17 players in the running. By the time registration closed, this figure had increased to 52, of which 25 survived the day.
Ricky Smith was one of the 52 entrants and he was also the man who bagged up the most chips as play drew to a close. Smith, from Tadley, finished Day 1a with 100,300 chips and was the only player to end with a six-figure stack.
A number of talented players took part in Day 1a of the GUKPT Reading Main Event including currently second placed James Martin (85,800), Stuart Fox (51,800), Terry Plummer (48,950), the veteran Willie Tann (47,500), Peter Haslam (40,525), Victor Ilyukhin (27,725) and Richard Hawes (18,675).
Day 1b commences at 12:00 on Friday and should see a much larger crowd turn out for the £550 buy-in tournament. Tune back into UK & Ireland PokerNews on Saturday morning for a recap of the key facts from the GUKPT Reading Main Event.
