Toby Lewis Finishes Third in the Super Tuesday

Toby Lewis

A total of 559 player took seats in the first Super Tuesday of May creating a prize pool of $559,000 of which $106,210 was reserved for the eventual champion. UK & Ireland players have a good record in this $1,050 buy-in tournament at PokerStars and that run of good form continued into this week’s event.

The nine-handed final table was set around 8.25 hours into play and when the dust had settled it became apparent that four of the final nine were from the UK or Ireland! Here’s how the finalists lined up.

The short stacked “GR8MIND” was the first player to be sent to the virtual sidelines, busting out in ninth place. GR8MIND opened to 11,200 from the cutoff seat and then called when “SlipperyBean” three-bet to 33,600 on the button. The {Q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} flop prompted GR8MIND to open-ship for his last few chips and SlipperyBean called. GR8MIND turned over {8-Spades}{7-Spades} for middle pair, which was ahead of the {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} of his opponent. The {Q-Spades} turn failed to alter anything but the {A-Clubs} river improved SlipperyBean to the best and and left GR8MIND high and dry.

A short time later a massive pot went down that resulted in "metr80’s" tournament coming to an abrupt end. From under the gun, Toby “810ofclubs” Lewis opened to 14,400 and he found two callers in the shape of “Killer_ooooo” a couple of seats over and “Negriin” on the button. This put the action onto metr80 in the small blind and he tried to pick up the already substantial pot with a squeeze all-in for 102,375. The big blind, and Lewis folded, but Killer_ooooo re-shoved and forced Negriin out of the pot. Killer_ooooo showed {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} to metr80’s {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and it was off to the races for the gigantic pot. The {10-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} flop propelled Killer_ooooo into an almost unassailable lead, although the {Q-Spades} on the turn gave metr80 some hope to win. That hope dissipated upon the arrival of the quad-completing {6-Diamonds} on the river. The Super Tuesday was down to seven players.

Despite winning that large pot, Killer_ooooo was the next player eliminated. At the 5,000/10,000 blind level, Killer_ooooo opened to 20,000 from the cutoff. Negriin three-bet to 51,225 from the big blind, only to see the initial raiser four-bet to 150,000. Negriin obviously liked his hand because he moved all in for more than 500,000 chips and Killer_ooooo called off his remaining 202,304 chips. Negrrin opened {J-Spades}{J-Clubs} to the {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} of his opponent and when the board ran out {10-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{7-Spades}{K-Spades}{A-Clubs} it was curtains for Killer_ooooo and Negriin soared into the lead.

Dutchman Johan “busto_soon” Van Til went busto soon after. Negrrin opened to 20,000 from under the gun, Van Til three-bet to 140,000 – leaving just 615 chips behind – and Negriin four-bet. Van Til obviously called and revealed the {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. Van Til’s hand was in front of the {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} of the hot-running Negriin but that all changed on a {4-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} board. Game over Van Til.

Negriin then sent Paul “uWannaLoan?” Delaney to the rail, although it was Lewis who did most of the damage one hand before. Lewis’ {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} stayed ahead of the {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} of Delaney to leave the latter with just 22,494 chips. These went into the middle on the very next hand holding {K-Diamonds}{9-Spades}, which lost to Negriin’s {9-Hearts}{8-Spades} as the board fell {2-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Spades}. Who ever said the Irish were lucky?

The UK’s “Kid Blackie” became Negriin’s fourth consecutive victim just before the 10-hour mark in a hand that highlighted how well Negriin was running. Negriin min-raised to 24,000 on the button and Kid Blackie made it 68,000 to play from his seat in the small blind. Negrrin four-bet to 171,225 and Kid Blackie called. Both players seemed disinterested in the {4-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop, but their interest was soon ignited when the {7-Diamonds} appeared on the turn. Kid Blackie lead for 118,555 and Negriin called. The {8-Clubs} was the river card and Kid Blackie bet 265,400. Negriin responded with a shove and Blackie called for his tournament life with his {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs} but was crushed by the {K-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} of Negriin. Ouch.

Another huge hand saw Lewis head to the sidelines with third place money in his PokerStars account. At the 7,000/14,000 level, Negriin opened to 32,449 and Lewis reraised to 66,500 from the next seat over. Negriin set the price to play at 172,745 and Lewis called. The RNG spread the {6-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop into view and both players checked. The {10-Clubs} turn saw Negrrin shove and Lewis call! Negriin needed a club, jack or ace otherwise his {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} would remain second best to the {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} of Lewis. One of Negrinn’s outs, the {6-Clubs}, fell on the river and Lewis busted out.

Heads-up lasted precisely one hand and it went Negriin’s way. Negriin raised to 30,393 and the UK’s SlipperyBean called. The {6-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{10-Spades} flop witnessed a raising war break out that resulted in SlipperyBean being all in with {J-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for top pair but way behind to the {J-Spades}{10-Clubs} of his opponent. The {4-Spades} turn and {Q-Clubs} river completed the board, the hand and the tournament and Negriin won the latest Super Tuesday!
