The arrest is in connection with the armed robbery of a security van outside the Newcastle Grosvenor Casino last Thursday.
Earlier this week two men were arrested and questioned at length by the police, but they have since been released on police bail. On Wednesday, police swooped to arrest a 37-year-old man from the Sunderland area who police say is helping them with their enquiries.
Detective Inspector Andy Fairlamb appealed to the public to aid the police in their investigation and urged them to come forward with any information they may have.
“Those responsible may have planned the incident and could have been in the area around the casino in the days, or weeks, before carrying out the robbery, checking out the location and planning what they were going to do.”
“I’d urge anyone who lives, works or perhaps passes the area on a regular basis and who may have seen any suspicious people or behaviour over the last few weeks to ring us with any information they have.”
According to D.I. Fairlamb, the robbery took place on the same day pop group Girls Aloud were performing in concert at the Metro Arena so there would have been plenty of people making their way to the venue and would have been near the casino at the time of the incident.
Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
