Malaysian-based casino giant Genting looks set to close another UK casino, putting 41 jobs at risk.
A spokesman for the company said Genting has entered into a 30-day consultation period over the future of the Friar Gate, Derby venue and the 41 staff currently employed there. Should the proposed casino closure go ahead, Genting will offer the 41 staff the opportunity to apply for available positions at the nearby Riverlights Genting casino.
“The decision to put forward this proposal has been taken following the successful £6 million development of Genting’s new premises in Derby – Genting Club Riverlights, which was completed in November 2011.”
“We have decided to consolidate our operations in Derby and focus our efforts on the superb new facilities we have created at Riverlights so we can satisfy all our customers’ requirements.”
“This decision is consistent with Genting’s ongoing strategy of investment and its commitment to improving quality across the provincial estate and we look forward to continuing investment in our properties to improve the customer experience.”
You may recall that the day following Elliot Panyi’s victory in the Genting Poker Series Grand Final, which was held at the Fox Poker Club, Genting decided to close the Fox Poker Club with immediate effect. The site of the former Fox Poker Club will be undergoing extensive refurbishment during the spring of 2013 before relaunching as one of Genting’s casinos.
