UKIPT Cork Day 2: Finneran Leads as Thew Bursts Bubble

Julian Thew bursting the bubble

Just 33 players remain in the PokerStars UKIPT Cork Main Event after Day 2 saw the 158 surviving player whittled down by a factor of five. Leading these 33 players back to the felt this afternoon is Ireland’s Thomas Finneran and his 465,000 chips.

Finneran has some impressive result on Irish soil including a seventh place finish in the 2007 Irish Open (€75,000 in prize money) and a third place finish in the €1,500 Irish masters in 2010 (€56,500), along with a number of cashes on the European Poker Tour. Now Finneran has secured his first cash on the popular UKIPT, he will pick up at least €1,510 for his efforts in Cork, but should he keep up his current form, he could walk away with the €60,400 first place prize.

The biggest talking point of the day was when the bubble burst. One of the games’ most famous sons, Julian Thew, popped the bubble in Cork. In the run up to the bubble Thew and former UKIPT Newcastle champion Richard Sinclair butted heads on several occasions, with Sinclair coming off the better of the two players from their confrontations. In another one of their battles, Sinclair opened to 5,400 from under the gun (blinds 1,500/3,000/300a), Thew three-bet all in for around 41,000 and Sinclair called.

Thew: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Sinclair: {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{q-Clubs} and Thew was eliminated in 49th place, leaving the other 48 players – who had gone on a break – to return to their seats having locked up at least amin-cash for their efforts in Cork.

Sinclair put Thew’s chips to good use, finally bagging up 189,400 ceramic discs despite having aces cracked by pocket kings late into proceedings. Other players to progress to Day 3 include Day 1a chip leader Pascal Tongi (320,500); Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree (93,000); Dara O’Kearney (82,000); Fergal Nealon (80,000) and Team PokerStars Online’s Dale “daleroxxu” Philip (57,500).

Play resumes at 12:00 Sunday and will continue until the eight-handed final table is reached. The blinds will be 2,500/5,000/500a and UK & Ireland PokerNews will bring you a recap of the action once that final table is settled.
