The latest edition of the PokerStars UKIPT opened its door yesterday as the €770 buy-in Cork Main Event got under way. By the time registration had closed its doors, 143 players had bought in but only 58 of those made it through to Saturday’s Day 2. Leading the way going into Day 2 is Pascal Töngi who managed to turn his 15,000 starting stack into a most impressive 124,500.
Töngi, who has no major live cashes to speak of, told the PokerStars Blog that two hands dominated the day’s play. The first saw him on the right side of a set-over-set scenario and the second saw an opponent five-bet all-in with pocket fives when Töngi held kings, the fives turned a straight but Töngi completed a flush on the river! When Töngi runs good it appears he runs really good!
With a stack of 124,500 chips, Töngi was the only player to bag up a six-figure stack, although Karl Thompson almost cracked through that barrier. Thompson ended with 99,400 chips in his arsenal, which puts him in second place so far. Rounding out the top five places are Stephen McGrath (82,400); Philip Peters (75,700) and David Corduff (69,300).
A selection of other names to look out for on Day 2 include former UKIPT Newcastle champion Richard Sinclair (52,600); Ireland’s Dermot Blain (37,700); Mick McCloskey (32,400) and the short stacked Paul McTaggart (9,100).
The second and final starting flight to UKIPT Cork kicks off at 12:00 noon and should see a much larger crowd descend on the Rochester Park Hotel for some hot poker action. Among those already bought in are Team PokerStars Pros Liv Boeree and Jake Cody while Team Online will be represented by Scotland’s Dale “daleroxxu” Phillip.
