The UKIPT Edinburgh Main Event has played out both of its starting flights after 358 players turned out for yesterday’s Day 1B. This takes the attendance for this popular event to 612, beating last season’s turnout of 519 by quite some margin.
This huge field has created a prize pool of £415,458 that will be shared out among the top 72 finishers. A min-cash will be worth £1050 while the eventual champion will leave the Scottish capital with an impressive £101,000.
Although there is still a long way to go in this tournament – there are still 267 players remaining – Liam Horgan has given himself the best chance of winning that huge first place prize. Horgan managed to turn his 15,000 starting stack into 119,800 chips. This not only saw him crowned as the Day 1B chip leader, but his stack is enough to lead the tournament overall.
Horgan is the chip leader by the narrowest of margins; Dusk Till Dawn poker club owner Rob Yong bagged up 119,100 chips after the eight 60-minute levels were completed. It is quite a rare occasion when Yong steps into the tournament limelight, but when he does, he generally makes a nuisance of himself! In late November, Yong finished second in the Dusk Till Dawn Caribbean Poker Party for a cool $50,700.
Day 1B was the chosen flight for a number of poker’s better-known players, a handful of them making it through to today’s Day 2. The likes of Jeff Kimber (72,500); Dominic Kay (77,900) and defending champion Fintan Gavin (45,500) all managed to navigate their way through Day 1B. The newest member of Team PokerStars Pro, Jake Cody, will also be in the Day 2 field, though the Triple Crown winner will have to re-enter the battle with 15,500 chips.
Play resumes at 12:00 at the Balmoral Hotel in the heart of Edinburgh. At least eight 60-minute levels will be played out and during that time the money bubble should either burst or be very close to doing so. Tune into UK & Ireland PokerNews on Sunday to discover how close to the money the tournament got to and which players are still in with a chance of becoming UKIPT Edinburgh champion.
