The seaside town of Blackpool is famous for its miles and miles of illuminations, but this weekend it is the stars of poker who are lighting up the promenade as the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Main Event is taking place there.
By the time the registration desk closed and re-entries were no longer permitted, there were 173 entries in total meaning the eventual winner will walk away with a bankroll-boosting first place prize of £49,000. The man in pole position for that massive payout is Stuart Rutter.
Rutter finished Day 1 with the welcomed problem of trying to fit 164,975 chips into a single plastic bag, more than three times the size of the average stack. Now that Rutter has chips he would be a great bet to go all the way and win his second GKPT title; his first was won back in 2010 when he took down the GUKPT Coventry Main Event.
Hot on Rutter’s heels are Susan Cheetham (159,150), Chris Para (125,250) and Trevor Reardon (123,675), whilst the likes of Kev Steele (91,150), Lewis Hunter (79,375), Simon Deadman (49,550), Nicolas Crisp (48,250) and Yucel Eminoglu (42,675) have a little more catching up to do.
Play resumes at 14:00 this afternoon and by the time the curtain comes down on proceedings later tonight we will have our final table set. Tune in on Sunday to discover which player bubbled, who made it into the money and which nine players have reached the GUKPT Blackpool final table.
