Timotheos Timotheou Finishes As UKIPT Newcastle Day 1a Chip Leader

Timotheos Timotheou

Aspers Newcastle Casino was full to bursting point yesterday as the £770 UKIPT Newcastle Main Event opened its doors to the poker adoring public. By the time the registration desk finally closed there were 246 players crammed into two rooms in the casino but after eight 60-minute levels just 105 of them made it through to Saturday's Day 2.

One man who certainly made it through was Timotheos Timotheou, the overnight chip leader. Timotheou ended Day 1a by having to solve the welcomed problem of having to somehow pack 134,000 chips into his storage bag. He managed it and will have to spend a good few minutes re-stacking them all again on Saturday.

Timotheou has six live cashes to his name – according to the Hendon Mob database – with the largest of the six topping the scales at an impressive €86,680. He was awarded that bankroll-boosting sum for taking down a €1,000 buy-in event at the 2010 European Masters of Poker II in Portugal. At this rate he will be adding another huge score to his name in Newcastle.

Other big stacks from UKIPT Newcastle Day 1a include Kevin Killeen (126,600), Francis Lacken (92,900), Khadir Khoshawy (86,300) and Steven Warburton (84,800).

Among the 246 entrants were many notable players and a handful of them managed to navigate through to minefield of a UKIPT Day 1. Some of the players to make it through included Ben “Son of Paul” Jackson (69,600), Jeff Kimber (55,300), Sam “The Squid” Grafton (39,600), former November Nine member Sam Holden (30,300), Jack Ellwood (29,600), Scott Shelley (28,600), Sebastian Saffari (27,300) and Keith “The Camel” Hawkins (13,300).

Day 1b kicks off t 12:00 and, like on Day 1, the players will battle it out for eight 60-minute levels. An even larger crowd is anticipated and should see the likes of Team PokerStars Pros Jude Ainsworth, Liv Boeree and Vicky Coren take to the felt. They will be joined by UKIPT regulars Nick Abou Risk, Max Silver and the dangerous Jamie Burland whilst the PokerStars Blog reports Sam Razavi will be playing after taking down the APPT Melbourne Main Event just a couple of days ago. It should be a fantastic day of poker.
