The £2,180 English Open Main Event got under way yesterday with the first of two starting flights taking place at the Fox Poker Club. The man who bagged up the most chips at the end of play was Igor Kurganov with 117,450 of the colourful ceramic discs.
Kurganov is a Russian pro who is an extremely talented individual and who has a number of brilliant results on his poker CV. Back in May 2011 he finished second in the €10,000 High Roller at EPT Grand Final in Madrid for €123,000 and also finished second in the £20,000 High Roller at EPT London for an additional £318,300. The in April 2012 Kurganov hit his biggest score to date, winning the €25,000 8-Max High Roller for a cool €1,080,000! Now that he has chips he will be very difficult to topple and we would fully expect him to make it to at least the money places.
Other players who bagged up plenty of chips included Main Event Travel sponsored pro Rhys Jones (116,100), Ian Simpson (103,625), Mathew Frankland (99,175), Marvin Babul (92,725), Chris Bjorin (86,575) and the previous champion Fabian Quoss (81,850).
Day 1b kicks off this afternoon and should attract an even larger field with even more notables in it. Jin us tomorrow to find out who has made it through to the official Day 2.
