GUKPT Goliath Kicks Off Today; Massive Fields Expected

GUKPT Goliath

Today is the first of three starting flights in the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Goliath event, a tournament that the organisers are hoping will attract upwards of 2,000 entrants!

The £120 No Limit Hold'em Goliath takes place over the course of five days and should its attendance figures should make it one of the largest live poker tournaments of the year, aside from the World Series of Poker events.

For their £100+£20 buy-in, players will receive a huge stack of 25,000 chips and will play to a 40-minute blind structure that is surprisingly slow; especially when one considers they only have five days in which to play to a winner. Blinds start at just 25/50 and progress rather smoothly, as you can see in the table below which shows the first 10 levels.

This year's Goliath is being played to a Re-Entry format, meaning that anyone who busts out earlier than they anticipated can re-enter for an additional £120. Players can only re-enter once per day, which means a player can enter a maximum of six times (twice per start day) and this should help to boost the prize pool significantly.

Last year's Goliath attracted a bumper crowd of 1,765 entrants, making it the largest land-based poker tournament held in Europe. The £176,500 prize pool was shared out among the top 261 finishers with the eventual winner, Lee Rawson, walking away with a massive first place prize of £32,705. Not bad for a £120 investment.

Another first for this year's Goliath is the fact it will be running alongside the GUKPT Coventry Main Event. This £1,070 buy-in tournament runs over the course of three days from Saturday 25 August to Monday 27 August with start times at 14:00 each day.
