Yesterday was Day 1c of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Goliath, the final starting day of this massive tournament. Although the official number of unique entrants were not announced by the tournament staff, the overall attendance was revealed midway through proceedings and it was good news. The 2012 GUKPT Goliath's overall attendance topped the scales at 1,954; an increase of almost 200 players on last year.
The 1,954 entrants created a prize pool of £194,500 but those who have managed to navigate through the three starting flights will be playing for £200,000 after the Grosvenor Coventry decided to add £5,500 to the prize pool. Although no comprehensive breakdown of the prize pool has been announced, we believe the top 290 players will be paid, each receiving a minimum of £140.
Day 1c's chip leader is also the chip leader overall. Matthew Oslandjones flew under the radar throughout the day, so much so that when the GUKPT Goliath blog wrote their recap of the action Osalndjones was nowhere to be seen. However, once the floor staff provided them with a detailed spreadsheet of the chip counts, Oslandjones' name was displayed at the top, his 462,500 chips more than anyone bagged up across the three starting days.
Other big stacks from Day 1c included Getnat Hailu, Steve Holden, Robert Cowen, Michael Poon and Shane Dewsbury; although there were a handful of other players who had to try and fit more than 300,000 chips into a smallish plastic bag!
Play for Day 2 commenced at 12:00 Saturday and will continue until 12-levels have been completed or until the tournament has been whittled down to just 27 players. Who will make it through to Sunday's Day 3? Tune in tomorrow to find out.
