GUKPT Goliath Day 1b: Abbas Ladak Amasses 417,100 Chips

Abbas Ladak

A staggering 520 entries were recorded for Day 1b of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Goliath yesterday but even more flabbergasting is the fact only 87 of them survived long enough to bag and tag their precious ceramic discs. One man who certain had chips to do that with was Abbas Ladak who ended the day with 417,100 of them; Day 1b's chip leader.

Ladak initially reported that he had 800,000 but upon a recount he settled on 417,100 – that is what 14 40-minute levels of poker will do for you. Joining Ladak towards the top of the chip counts include players such as Ronald Stomphorst (329,800), Glyn Cook (317,000) and Chen Tam (300,800).

Two other notable players who managed to navigate through the minefield included veteran Joe Grech (174,800) and the reigning champion Lee Rawson (45,500). As the GUKPT Goliath blog states, Rawson's stack is less than 10-big blinds but he was apparently down to just four big blinds last year and still managed to come back to win.

Today is the final starting day and therefore players' last chance to get involved in this amazing tournament. Word around the campfire is that today's attendance could top 1,000 but that remains to be seen. One person who will be among the entrants on Day 1c is your friendly neighbourhood UK & Ireland PokerNews Editor; me! Hopefully I will be having to write about myself topping the chip counts later tonight!

Play gets underway at 12:00 with late registration open until the end of Level 6. Head over to the GUKPT Goliath blog for the live updates and check back in here tomorrow for a recap of the action.
