Welshwizard9 Takes Down The PokerStars Sunday Million

Sunday Million

It has been a great weekend for online poker players from the United Kingdom. First we had Craig McCorkell winning the $150,000 ChampionChip event on Ongame and we also had the player known as welshwizard9 going all the way and taking down the PokerStars Sunday Million; the largest weekly online poker tournament.

This week's $200+$15 Sunday Million attracted a gigantic crowd of 6,153 and all but 900 of those went home empty handed, with only VPPs to show for their efforts. The 900 who made it to the money were whittled down to the nine handed final table by the end of Level 36 and when the finale commenced welshwizard9 found himself as the chip leader but not having the best of seats due to Team PokerStars Pro Richard Toth being two to his left.

One by one the players fell by the wayside and with each elimination the prize money grew ever larger. Eventually our hero found himself heads-up with 46,885,040 chips to the 14,644,960 of Poland's BoBoNe93. The pair paused for a few minutes to discuss a deal but a compromise could not be reached and the decision was made to carry on and play the tournament out.

The heads-up battle was rather short lived and, as is often the case, ended with a coinflip. BoBoNe93 opened for a raise, welshwizard9 three-bet, BoBoNe93 moved all-in for 25 million chips with what turned out to be {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} and welshwizard9 made the call with {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. The {5-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} left the hand wide open and the {9-Diamonds} on the turn gave even more outs to BoBoNe93. But the {10-Diamonds} on the river busted BoBoNe93 and saw this week's title head to the UK.
