Finding Niche Poker Events In The UK & Ireland

UK Poker Tournaments

Whenever the WSOP ends, players start taking a little bit more interest in the rarer forms of poker. Because the series is full of short handed, limit, PLO, stud, and mixed games; it reminds us that there is more to poker than just No limit.

It is no problem getting your fix of these of these games online 24/7, but the same can't be said for live. Particularly if you live in the UK & Ireland, where the choices are few and far between.

Most of these games are more expensive to run for casinos, and rarely are all the dealers trained up in the niche forms of poker, so you are lucky to see much more than the odd PLO side event at a festival.

But we have searched through the rest of the year's tournament schedule and unearthed some exceptions to the rule, where niche events are more than just a side event.

Grosvenor Victoria Championships

  • Dates - July 23-29
  • Location - Victoria Casino, London

Taking place right now at the legendary Vic card room, this week long festival has a rare eclectic mix of side events. On Wednesday there is a £220 PLO event, on Thursday a £275 six max event, and on Sunday there is both a £220 PLO8 tournament and a £112 ante-up tournament.

The only sticking point for anyone from outside of the capital wishing to travel down to the Vic, is that the festival takes place just as soon as the Olympics kick off, so expect hectic travel conditions and over inflated hotel prices.

  • Dates - August 24-27
  • Location - Dusk Till Dawn, Nottingham

Where else but Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham can you find affordable niche poker? The folks at APAT have returned to the home of poker for a week of well structured, affordable poker.

On top of the main event, there is also a six max event, a PLO event, and that rarest of things, a stud tournament. Each event is priced at a very reasonable £55 too, and boasts a deep structure for the price.

GUKPT Grand Final

  • Dates - November 24 – December 2
  • Location - Victoria Casino, London

There isn’t as much choice for this second festival at the Vic at the end of the year, but it does have both a £275 PLO event and a £112 six max event as part of the schedule, which is more than most festivals can boast.

European Short Handed Poker Championships

  • Dates - September 26-30
  • Location - Regency Hotel Dublin

With a deep starting stack and six max tables, the €550 main event is a real must for online players who are sick of being forced to play full ring live. Not only is the main event six max, the side events all become six max once they get down to 30 players (One of which is also a PLO event) and there are also six max cash games.

But possibly the most enticing thing about this event is that despite being in Ireland, the majority of the field is French. Over 250 French players have pre registered for the main event this year, and they made up the best part of the 656 entrants from last year (which saw Steven King win for €63,000).
