PokerStars UKIPT Dublin Main Event Day 1a: William Champion Leads

Day 1a of the UKIPT Dublin Main Event, one of the most popular stops on the tour, saw 199 players exchange €770 for the chance to become a champion on irish soil. By the time the tournament director called time on proceedings a champion was in front of the 91 surviving players; 46-year old William Champion.

The father of four ended Day 1a with a tournament leading stack of 129,700 chips, an extra 17,700 than his nearest rival Paul McCaffrey. According to the PokerStars Blog, Champion is a data storage engineer by trade but is also a poker enthusiast who regularly plays tournaments during the week in Paris — where he works — and who recently reached the final table of a £100 side event at the record-breaking UKIPT Nottingham festival.

You are forgiven for not knowing the other big stacks from Day 1a as they include the likes of Marc McDonnell (106,600), Michael Farrelly (90,400), Graeme Crozier (86,900) and Pat Rooney (73,700) but they all got to the top of the counts by merit and we will have to keep our eye out for them when they return to their seats for Saturday's Day 2.

They will be joined in the CityWest Hotel by the more familiar Jason Tompkins (34,100), former UKIPT Dublin winner Max Silver (21,100), UKIPT Season 2 Leaderboard winner Sam Razavi (20,800) and Dara O'Kearney (20,700).

Some of the big names who will not be making another appearance in the Main Event in Dublin include both Barny and Ross Boatman, Nick Abou Risk, Surinder Sunar and the Dusk Till Dawn management duo of Rob Yong and Simon Trumper. All the players in this paragraph busting out at different points of Day 1a.

Day 1b kicks off at 1200 Friday and should see at least the same number of players as Day 1a, though we believe the field will be much more substantial. How many will turn up? How many players will make it through? Those are questions we will answer for you tomorrow so tune in then!
