The players in Group A of the PartyPoker Premier League V were back in action yesterday playing the second of their four matches. There were mixed results for the British trio of Sam Trickett, Luke Schwartz and Mathew Frankland but a great win for one of Pokernews' own, Mr Tony G!
After the elation of winning his $125,000 seat to these finals and then finishing in the points in the first round Frankland was brought back to Earth with a bump. Seven of the eight players gain valuable points and Frankland was the eighth place finisher in Round 2 and will need a deep finish in his next two games if he is to progress to the finals.
His executioner was Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov but it was his fellow Brit, Schwartz, who got the ball rolling. Schwartz opened to 20,000 in middle position and Frankland, one seat to his left, three-bet to 57,000 with what turned out to be . From the big blind Katchalov four-bet to 110,000, folding out Schwartz but Frankland opted to move all in and he must have known he was in bad shape when Katchalov snap-called. He was in bad shape because his opponent held and when the board ran out Frankland was eliminated.
Around 40-minutes later Schwartz was sent packing in sixth place when he three-bet jammed with over the top of Trickett's opening raise but then Tony G woke up with a pair of queens. Schwartz received no help from the board and it was up to Trickett to fly the British flag.
Trickett never really had a stack to work with and was in push-or-fold mode for a large part of the latter stages. He chose to move in with again and Tony G called with a lowly pair of deuces, which held on a board and Trickett busted out in third.
Tony G went into the heads-up battle with an almost two-to-one chip lead over Erik Seidel and this lead was more than enough to get the job done. The final hand saw Seidel limp in with and Tony G checked with . The flop came down , Tony G checked, Seidel bet 60,000, Tony G moved all-in and Seidel called. The turn was the and the river the and with that Tony G won the second round earning himself 16 points and $32,000 in cash.
