The European Poker Tour Berlin Main Event played out its second starting day yesterday and a monster field took part. By the time registration had been close there were 502 players who had exchanged €5,300 for 30,000 tournament chips and the chance to become an EPT champion.
As was the case on Day 1a, they played 10 one-hour levels on Tuesday and when the chips had been bagged and tagged and the dust had settled a total of 219 players were remaining, 11 of them from the UK or Ireland! The best placed of this army was Marc Wright who ended Day 1b with 182,600.
Wright has a number of live cashes to his name according to the Hendon Mob database, the best of which is for €15,400 that he won for coming 13th in the recent Irish Open that was won by Kevin Vandersmissen. A similar result in this tournament will see him walk away with almost double that, €30,000, but we are a long way from making it to the money places which start at 112nd place.
Also armed with a huge pile of chips going through to today's Day 2 is, unsurprisingly, Jake Cody. The Triple Crown winner ended the day with 149,700 and is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the Berlin Main Event. Along with Wright and Cody the only UK & Ireland player to make it through with over 100,000 chips was Ireland's Jason Tompkins from Athy Co. Kildare. He finished the day by writing 107,500 on his grey plastic chip bag.
The other's who made it through are Paul Vas Nunes (99,500), Phillip Huxley (87,400), Rhys Jones (87,100), Ross Loggie (83,700), recent PokerStars.com Sunday Million final tablist Rupert Elder (79,400), former EPT London champion David Vamplew (72,600), JP Kelly (54,900) and Stephen Chidwick (34,400).
Play resumes at the Hyatt hotel at 12:00 CET and we believe the plan is to play five 75-minute levels though we are awaiting confirmation from the tournament director on that front. You can follow all of the action from the PokerNews Live Reporting team from midday and make sure you check back here tomorrow morning to discover which of our heroes have made it through to the third official day of play.
