Daniel Haglund Wins GUKPT Walsall

The second leg of this year's Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) has been completed after the 153 entrants were finally outlasted by a young man named Daniel Haglund. The youngster from Tibro in Sweden will wake up today with an extra £45,100 in his bank account and a trophy to remind him of his conquests in the UK.

Haglund had to battle his way through a field that was the home to the likes of Daniel "luckyscrote" Carter, three-time GUKPT champion Julian Thew, Sunny Chattha, his brother Chaz Chattha, Jerome Bradpiece, Stuart Fox and Jeff Kimber on his way to winning the title. And let's not forget the talented final table that he had to navigate his way through, a final table that was the home to Simon Deadman and the seasoned live pro that is Steve Holden.

In fact it was Holden who was Haglund's last standing opponent, creating an old school versus young gun dynamic. The pair started the heads-up battle almost even in chips and they seemed content to play some small-pot poker but that went out of the window when Holden opened the betting, Haglund three-bet and Holden announced he was all-in and his Swedish opponent made the call. Holden, an Aston Villa fan, tabled pocket fours but they were in bad shape against the nines of Haglund. Five community cards, that were void of a four, later and it was all over. Holden was eliminated in second place, just as he had been in the 2010 Tournament of Champions on this very tour and online pro Haglund had won his first major live title.

Hadlung admitted he was unsure if he would play the next GUKPT events but there is no doubt in our minds that his is a name we will here about again. Despite his tender age the Swede has a deep run in EPT San Remo to his name along with a final table appearance at the World Series of Poker so keep an eye out for him in the coming months.
