The second leg of of this season's Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) stopped off in the Black Country for the Walsall Main Event and it attracted an impressive 153 players through its doors. By the time nine levels had been played around half the field had been lost but for the other half, especially Chris Gavriel, the dream of glory is still well and truly alive.
Gavriel bagged up a tournament leading stack of 170,000 during the Day 1 and is now in a great position to add another win to his poker CV. In January 2011 he won the £300 Monthly Deepstack at the Dusk Till Dawn poker club in Nottingham for £31,184, a career best, but you need to go back to September 2006 to find his next five-figure sore an £18,000 payday for winning a £1,000 event in Birmingham.
Whilst Gavriel has high hopes of winning GUKPT Walsall a list of well-known and established players fell by the wayside during the day's play including Stuart Fox, Jerome Bradpiece, the in-form Ruslan Vlasov, veteran Mickey Wernick and Sunny Chattha.
Play resumes at 14:00 this afternoon and will continue until nine levels have been played of the final table has been decided, whichever of those comes first. Be sure to come back tomorrow to discover who has made it through and who is taking in what Walsall has to offer from outside the casino.
