Top 10 UK Stories of 2011: #1, The Rise And Rise Of Sam Trickett

Sam Trickett

Nine cashes, six final tables, two wins and $4,598,038 in winnings. Those are the figures put up by our number one UK poker story of 2011 and they belong to Mr Sam Trickett.

Before the start of the year Trickett was rapidly gaining a reputation for being a fearless poker player and was mentioned in various articles as being "one to watch" or a "rising star". But if today you scour the internet looking for opinions of Trickett most, if not all, will use a plethora of superlatives to describe the former professional footballer and we would not be surprised to find a few of them calling him the best in the world, something reflected in his Global Poker Index ranking.

Prior to 2011 Trickett had around $1,700,000 in live tournament winnings helped in part by his win in the 2009 GUKPT Luton Main Event, a fourth place finish in the $5,000 No Limit Hold'em event at the 2008 World Series of Poker and a runner-up finish in the same $5,000 in 2010. The East Retford born pro also reached the final table of EPT Vilamoura and won the PartyPoker World Open VI, both in 2010 but his achievements over in 2011 were nothing short of amazing, especially in the high roller events.

The 25-year old kicked off 2011 in spectacular fashion taking down the star-studded A$100,000 No Limit Hold'em High Roller at the Aussie Millions. This result alone was worth A$1,525,000. Just a few days later Trickett, along with 19 other players, bought into a Super High Roller with an astronomical buy-in of A$250,000 and he eventually finished as runner-up to Erik Seidel for a cool A$1,400,000. Almost £2,000,000 in winnings and it was still January!

February saw Trickett reach the final table of the $5,000 WPT Regional event at the Aviation Club eventually finishing sixth for a score of €43,545. Next up for Trickett was the 2011 WSOP and it was quite disappointing by his own admission but he still cashed twice coming 57/2,192 and 16/1,340 both in $1,500 events.

After qualifying for a 2 Year B card in the recently formed Epic Poker League, Trickett took part in the inaugural event, a $20,000 Six Max No Limit Hold'em event and was leading proceedings right up to the death but he busted out in 11th place, adding almost $50,000 to his already massive winnings total. That was in August and then in September he reached the final table of the €8,500 Partouche Poker Tour Main Event, a tournament that followed in the footsteps of the WSOP Main Event and was paused until Noember so more on that later.

Another month and other two major final tables! October was kind to Trickett as it saw him make it to the final table of the £20,000 High Roller at EPT London, seventh place and £68,800 and he followed that up by finishing fourth in the €5,000 Pot Limit Omaha event at the 2011 WSOPE in Cannes.

Remember we mentioned the delayed Partouche Poker Tour Main Event that Trickett reached the final table of? Yes. Well he did not just reach he final table he went on to take it down for €1,000,000 his third seven-figure score of the year! Unbelievable! Trickett's year is even better if you take into account the fact he won massive in ultra high stakes cash games in Macau and span $11,000 into hundreds of thousands of dollars, bought a flat in London with the winnings and purchased a top of the range Audi R8 with profits from poker. Living the dream.

If 2012 can be half as kind to Trickett as 2011 was then he will be a very happy man indeed. Ladies and gentlemen we give you Sam Trickett.
