Between August 24-28 the Grosvenor G Casino in The Ricoh Arena is going to be host to a record-breaking poker tournament, with more than 1,500 people expected to pay the £100 + £20 entry fee (25% of the registration fee goes to the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity) for a place in the record books and a first place prize of at least £25,000!
The tournament is already carrying a £100,000 guarantee but poker players like to pretend that it is not about the money but the act of winning that is important so a special Team Challenge has been announced. Teams of up to six players can register and they will be awarded points based on their in-the-money finish. Whichever team accumulates the most points wins a trophy, a $1,000 private online tournament and of course, bragging rights. In addition to this, teams entered will have extra coverage in the chip counts and the live reports so that their progress, or lack of it, is there for all to see!
The so-called Goliath tournament is attempting to break the current record of number for entrants in a UK-based poker tournament, which currently stands at 1,564, set by the Dusk 'Till Dawn poker club in May 2011. Can the Goliath crush the opposition or will it be brought to its knees by a tournament with a lesser buy-in? Only time will tell.
