UK Pokernews Roundup: Main Event Day 1D, Big Weekend of UK Poker and Scottish Poker Open Cancelled?
Main Event Day 1D
The numbers are in and following a jam packed day 1D a total of 7319 players have sat down for the Main Event this year, creating a first prize of $8,944,138. This is the second largest prize pool in the history of the WSOP and nearly 5000 players will be coming back for their day 2 to compete for it.
FTOPS champion Jack Ellwood is flying high for the Brits with 127,000, he is on a real heater this year so will be one to rail in the main event. Paul Jackson (54500) and Ross Boatman (44675) are amongst the better known players also coming back for day 2B. We literally did a double take when we saw one very notable UK player coming back for day 2B. Olympic Gold Medalist and Prizefighter champion Audley Harrison, who is coming back with 37500.
Heavyweight boxer Harrison may come as a surprise participant in the main event but we checked out his record and he clearly has game. In 2007 he came 2nd in a Bellagio Cup event for $76,895 and it looks like he won $90,298 last month coming 3rd in a Venetian Deep Stack event. He is good friends with Matchroom Poker director Eddie Hearn and it looks like we know what he is doing when he finally hangs up his gloves.
While you are watching our Live Updates you can win money for free. That’s because Pokerstars are kindly hosting a series of $2,000 PokerNews WSOP Reporting Freerolls when the main event gets deep on July 15, 16, and 17 at 19:05 EDT. To register for the freeroll you just need a PokerStars account and the password which will be released a few hours before the tournament is to begin.
British Masters Poker Tour Liverpool this Weekend
While the pros are away at the main event, now is a great time to be playing in the UK. The British Masters Poker Tour makes its next stop in Liverpool at the Gala Casino starting with a £200 side event tonight at 6.00pm. The £500 main event begins tomorrow at 3.00pm and finally a £100 side event rounds things off at 5.00pm on Sunday. The tour is fantastic value and lots of fun, so certainly one to play if you are getting the live poker itch this weekend.
GUKPT Club Championships Tomorrow
Or failing that, the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour is hosting the second wave of their new ‘Club Championships’ format tomorrow at 2.00pm. G Casinos in Cardiff, Newcastle, Salford, Sheffield, Coventry and London are the venues for the £200 event, which will also see league points and a £150,000 Champion of Champions seat to the winner of each event.
Find out how you can get sponsored for GUKPT events in the future as well as an exclusive £11 and £55 tournament token when you sign up via UK Pokernews, in our GUKPT Sponsorship Guide.
Scottish Poker Open Cancelled?
The very ambitious Scottish Poker Open event which was due to be held in August is rumoured to be cancelled. The £2500 event was getting quite a bit of criticism on several poker forums for taking profit out of online satellite prize pools and also for including lavish yacht and limo transport to the event, which was part of the reg fee. The cancellation isn’t confirmed, but a thread on the MTT Poker forum appears to have broken the news it has been cancelled.
