World Series of Poker 2010: Richard Ashby Wins Event #21: $1,500 Seven Card Stud
Richard ‘Chufty’ Ashby has bagged Britain yet another bracelet and $140,467 at the WSOP 2010 in event 21, a $1,500 Buy-in Seven Card Stud tournament. 38 year old Richard Ashby was born in London in 1972 and currently lives in Watford, England; when he isn’t roaming the world playing poker tournaments. Ashby had already had 8 WSOP cashes but no bracelets, today’s win brought his total WSOP cashes up to 9 and his WSOP earnings to $219,748.
Ashby beat a field of 408 players to come first and win the sought after bracelet. He entered the final table only third in chips and beat the likes of Jon Turner and Sorel Mizzi before finally taking every last chip in the game when he knocked out US player Christine Pietsch in second place for $86,756 after a . Four other WSOP bracelet winners also cashed in this event they were Dan Heimiller (4th), Alexander Kravchenko (9th), Scott Seiver (19th), and Rod Pardey, Jr. (37th).
The UK doesn’t usually do all that well in stud events but Ashby seems to be trying to change that one game at a time, even though his last 8 WSOP cashes have been for Omaha and NLHE, Ashby is no stranger when it comes to stud games, having won the European Masters Seven Card Stud event in 2009. He is usually known for playing high stakes cash games but can clearly adapt to tournaments being as he has already earned nearly $800,000 in tourney winnings since 2003. Ashby was the only player from the UK at the final table and he managed to win it. Maybe now more Brits will be inspired and brush up on their stud skills and we’ll start seeing more stud bracelets coming across the ocean.
This is the 3rd bracelet that British players have won this year already, with Praz Bansi and James Dempsey also taking first place bracelets whilst flying the British flag. Both Bansi and Demsey came out to rail Ashby on the final table with a whole group of other Brits in a strong show of allegiance.
When asked how he felt about his win Ashby said “Yeah I feel good, but it hasn’t sunk in yet so I’m sort of pretty shocked because I’ve been trying so long to win a tournament out here, maybe four or five years. I’m really pleased; I put a lot of energy into it so finally, I’ve got one!”
