Gareth Johns Wins APAT Welsh Amateur Poker Championship
Over the weekend was the first leg of the 4th season of the Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT) at the Aspers Casino in Swansea. 102 runners contested the main event, with a further 20 runners playing in the £250 Pot Limit Hold’em Professional League and 70 playing the £25 PLO side event. Courtesy of Betfair the winners of the professional and amateur events also won a GUKPT package and valuable points in a race for a sponsorship package, worth £20,000 for each league.

Stephen Boyd won the pro league for £2,250 plus a GUKPT seat. There has been some detraction in the poker community that the pro league would be a Pot Limit Hold’em series, rather than No Limit, but with just 20 runners, a GUKPT seat and a shot at a £20,000 sponsorship package, this has to be one of the best value leagues around.

The main event was won by long time chip leader Gareth Johns of Cardiff, who not only won £2,300 but also a seat in a GUKPT event. The next event has already sold out, the UK Championships at the Vic in London between April 17th-18th. You can play in all the regional and online events on Betfair as well as registering for future APAT events.

Not only can you qualify for APAT events at Betfair, when you sign up via UK Pokernews you are eligible for a $1,500 sign up bonus and exclusive money added tournaments.
