After a slight lull during a very busy time on the poker calendar which diluted a lot of tournament fields, the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour was back in business with a massive main event in Blackpool. 287 players attended the Las Vegas of the UK leg, creating a £287,000 prize pool and a massive £84,900 first prize.
The eventual winner was 36 year old property developer Priyan de Mel of London, who defated young online pro James Williams heads up. Priyan ended the tournament when his J8 hit a board of JJ75, which forced Williams to bluff the turn with 3-6 for a gutshot, but a queen on the river shipped the title to the Londoner. De Mel knows all about hitting gutshots, as he modestly reminded everyone of a gutshot he hit on day one holding 5-2 on an A4X board against the pocket fours of his friend Andrew Seden "I am delighted to have won this title, but I could easily have been out on day one if I had not hit my gutshot against Andy" he commented.
Priyan won £84,900 and a seat in the Champion of Champions event at the end of the year.
The tour now continues with its Grand Final at the Vic in London, which starts with a £5,000 Heads Up Championships this Thursday the 19th and the £3000 main event will start on the 26th. The exciting news is that the tour has been confirmed for next year and tomorrow the 2010 schedule will be announced.
