Tony Bloom becomes Chairman of Brighton
Earlier this month we brought you news of the Chelsea owner allegedly losing big in a poker game and now it comes full circle as a poker player has become the primary investor in a football club. High stakes poker player Tony 'The Lizard' Bloom is one of the most highly respected poker players in the UK as well as one of the most successful sports bettors around, and he has just invested £93 million in Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club, making him the Chairman with 75% shareholding.
Tony Bloom has plenty of big poker cashes under his belt, including winning the VC Poker Cup and coming 2nd in the $100,000 Aussie Millions High Rollers event. His total tournament winnings are just under $2 million, although this is said to be a drop in the ocean compared to his sports betting and bookmaking fortune.
"I want to see the club build on the momentum under our newly-appointed manager Russell Slade," Tony Bloom said. "I am determined to see us back in the Championship as soon as possible. I want to fulfil the dreams of so many of our great fans just as my grandfather Harry Bloom did in the glory days of the 1970s with Brian Clough, Peter Taylor and Alan Mullery."
This is obviously a dream come true for Bloom, but this is also great for the town of Brighton, who not only have a huge potential for growth for their football club but who also have a buzzing poker scene and maybe Brighton will be the place to play cards the day of a home match if Bloom can get the away team out for a game of cards after the match.
UK Study into Underage Gambling
The National Lottery Commission is funding a study into the habits of underage gamblers for research purposes, which will provide a survey of the gambling preferences of 12 to 15 year olds. It will take place at Salford University and sample a group of almost 9000 players, primarily looking at National Lottery products but also to other wider forms of gambling.
