Gala Coral British Poker Tour Cancelled, GUKPT Student Championships Announced
Gala Coral British Poker Tour Cancelled
We are yet to hear an official announcement, but it appears that after much speculation that the tour would be starting again in 2009, the GCBPT has been cancelled. The reasons appear to have been a Commercial decision has been made to stop the tour because of the recession.
The GCBPT was a tour that filled a very important gap in the live poker market in the UK. The £500 event attracted a large share of amateur players and professionals alike, and always had added money and tournament seats to the prize pool. The pros loved the tour because there were a lot of soft spots at the table, and the amateurs loved it because it was an affordable way to a fortune and a major title.
At the moment, it's hard to see how and why the recession could be a primary reason to stop the tour, because it always sold out very quickly and you only have to look at the recent numbers for the side events of the GUKPT (Some between 150-300) to see there is a real thirst for £200-£500 events in the UK. Hopefully a new organisation will come along and fill this gap in the UK market soon, or better yet, the GCBPT will make some sort of return.
GUKPT add Student Championship to Schedule
The GCBPT's loss is surely the GUKPT's gain, as the biggest tour in the UK is getting much bigger. The G Casino in Blackpool will host the GUKPT Student Championships during the GUKPT Festival in November. The overall GUKPT Student Champion will take home a GUKPT tablet trophy on top of gaining a seat in the exclusive £100,000 Champion of Champions tournament plus expenses.
Further details will be announced in March, if you are a member of a University Poker Society, please ask your President to email firstname.lastname@example.org for full details on how to take part in the competition, including deadlines for registration. If your University does not have a Poker Society then this is the perfect time to start one!
What another fantastic innovation from the premier poker tour in the UK, and what an event the Champion of Champion's event will be at the end of the year, as they will be welcoming GUKPT champions, side event winners, online festival winners, APAT champions and now the best student players in the country.
