Fiachra Meere wins the Irish Masters

The Paddy Power Poker Irish Winter Festival drew to a close last night, with Fiachra Meere of Limerick being crowned the Irish Masters Champion. He overcame 423 other hopefuls and defeated Chris Wood heads up to take the title and a €150,000 pay day, while Chris Wood took €106,000. What makes this heads up match really fascinating is both men qualified for the main event via freerolls; Meere won his seat at his local card clubs freeroll and Wood won his online for free at Paddy Power Poker.

So €256,000 returned between the two men without a penny of investment from either, that's not a bad ROI at all.

The final table paid out as follows:

1st Fiachra Meere — €150,000
2nd Chris Wood — €106,000
3rd John Rafferty — €68,500
4th David Poole — €57,000
5th Peter Murphy — €48,700
6th Jamie Zambuni — €40,500.
7th Andreas Schippani — €24,000
8th Warren Woodall — €17,180

LEOCOP is underway

Last night, Norwegian MrHanky11 became the first person to take down a Ladbrokes LEOCOP event from the latest instalment of the online festival. He bested 417 runners in event one, the $50 rebuy, to take down the $16,887.51 first prize.

Edward Ihre, MD of Ladbrokes Poker said: "The number of players from countries all over Europe playing in our festival is really gratifying, it's been a great start to the 2008 LEOCOP IV and day three of the 15-day event brings us the Daddy. This is a favourite with Laddies regulars, with a deepstack structure offering 5000 starting chips and 20 minute blinds levels so the players can really get their teeth into it." He continued: "On Wednesday we are hosting two events with added money that totals $12,500, the LEOCOP Ladies Championship and a Beat the Team event with our top pros as Bounties so there is something for everybody. Ladbrokespoker.com is definitely worth a visit!"

The festival continues for the next 14 days, culminating in the main event on November 9th with a whopping $250,000 added to the prize pool, only at Ladbrokes Poker.

888 UK Open Underway

The 888 Poker UK Open started yesterday and the line up is star studded. This is one of the landmark UK televised tournaments that has not only launched lots of big name (most notably Ian Frazer and Andrew Feldman) but also is one of the events that really bridges the gap between sports and poker. Once again, lots of faces from the world of sport are in the field and a few years ago snooker ace Matthew Stevens won the whole thing.
