Julian "Yoyo" Thew has been ripping up the poker tables in recent months, picking up some very decent purses along the way with a string of final table appearances, including a very creditable 6th place in the €5,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event at the Master Classics of Poker 2005, Amsterdam.
The year started in the same vein with first place in the £1,000 No Limit Hold'em Main Event at the Grosvenor Grand Challenge at Luton, resulting in a useful £48,000 payday. Rewards have continued to come Julian Thew's way throughout 2005 but the next winner's trophy wasn't received until last month for first place at the Midland Masters 2005 at Walsall.
This was followed by a runners-up spot at St Kitts in the Caribbean in a $500 buy-in tournament and now another near miss just this week - back in the somewhat chillier resort of Brighton, East Sussex. The event was the £500 Double Chance Freezeout No Limit Hold'em Tournament with 76 runners.
Leading European player, Dave Colclough, was looking well-placed at one point before he suffered some heavy losses and bowed out. The final table soon reduced to three, including chip leader, Julian Thew, Perry Fox (a UK player with a decent history of cashes at smaller events) and Bob Clarke.
Perry Fox has found most success on the Southern England circuit but most recently captured a creditable 4th place at one of the weekly Bellagio $1,000 buy-in Friday/Saturday No Limit Tournaments in Las Vegas. The $5,430 prize paid for the air fare with plenty to spare.
But, back in Brighton! As always in the late stages, chips can fly about thanks to a river card. In one crucial hand, Fox took a large pot from Thew. Fox held suited Kd 7d with a flush draw on the flop of 9d 5d 3h. Thew move all-in with his Ah 5h and was called. Needing a K, 7 or a diamond but no A or 5, Fox hit the flush on the river to survive and charged to the top of the leader board in one fell swoop.
"Yoyo" Thew was now behind both opponents but lived up to his nickname by virtually eliminating Clarke after flopping a set against Clarke's pocket aces, before dropping again after losing a large pot to Fox who went on to clear up and take the prize of £12,400. Meanwhile, the "Yoyo" took another £7,600 to round off a scintillating 2005.
