Irish Poker Championship opens the New Year 0001

Poker in Ireland gets off to a flyer in 2006 with the Irish Poker Championship in Dublin. Worth a thumping €500,000 in estimated prize money for the Main Event alone, this festival promises to elevate Irish poker to a new level with established professionals and new qualifiers hoping to make it to the TV tables.

The venue is the City West Hotel in Dublin which will host three tournaments, starting on 6th January and culminating in the Main Event finale on 8th January.

Promoter Fintan Gavin said: "The final will be broadcast live on television, and will bring the cream of European poker talent to Dublin. Supporting events will include €500 and €250 freezeout tournaments, with estimated prize pools of €100,000 and €75,000, respectively.

"This will be one of the biggest poker tournaments ever staged in Europe. It has been a year in the planning stages and finally with the help of tournament director Donal Mac Aonghusa, the time is now right. We will put the emphasis on value for money and comfort for the players and their families."

"The main tournament will be a three day event giving the best players the time to come out on top."

Amongst those expected to benefit from the long structure (starting with 10,000 in chips and 60 minute blind levels throughout) are members of the Hendon Mob, Ross Boatman, Barny Boatman, Joe Beevers and Ram Vaswani together with many of the Irish-based professional ranks, such as Roy "The Boy" Brindley and WSOP finalist, Andrew Black. Plenty more from the cream of Europe are expected to register along with an ever-expanding army of players from "celebrity" ranks plus a host of on-line qualifiers.

TV coverage will initially be via Irish broadcaster, RTE, on 27th January and later in the UK on Pokerzone (Channel 226 on Sky).

The full schedule at the event is:
