London's Calling: Strong UK Showing in Day 1A of £1000 No Limit

jp kelly The introduction of a new £1000 event at the WSOPE this year clearly had the desired effect, with an impressive 295 players taking their seats for day 1a, with an equally impressive number expected for today. With only 3000 starting chips, however, that number was to dwindle down to just 40 in record time, as the name of the game was carnage. Phil Hellmuth was one of the first notables to exit, pushing all in against a draw and missing against the pocket kings of Eddie Hearn. The Devilfish, Eric Seidel and Barry Greenstein were also amongst the early casualties.

The action was so fast that the decision was made to end the day early in the middle of level nine.

Strong UK Showing
It was a great day for the representatives of the host nation yesterday, as 29 of the 40 survivors were from the United Kingdom. Amongst the notables were Ian Frazer, JP Kelly, Roland De Wolfe, Joe Grech and Ben Vinson. This is a great omen for the Brits who might finally, in its third year, manage to snap up a WSOPE bracelet on home soil.

JP On Top
A fantastic day for this years $1500 Pot Limit Hold'em Champion JP Kelly who finished the day with a massive lead of 98,825. Kelly indicated in our interview with him that he is really going for bracelet number 2 already.

Richard Kellett is another young UK player that had a good opening day, winning coinflips for fun and busting more players than anyone else yesterday. Kellett already boasts an FTOPs and a GUKPT side event win this year and this would really be the icing on the cake for him.

Top Ten Chip Counts
Kelly, J.P. (aka, John Paul) 98,825
Kellett, Richard 67,225
Stucke, David 45,875
Frazer, Ian 43,625
Allen, Richard 38,375
Seden, Andrew 32,625
Chai, Swee Fah 30,150
Green, Martin 30,050
Kirkwood, Constance 29,150
De Meulder, Matthias 28,975

Today's Action
Today is day 1B of the £1000 no limit event at the WSOPE and we are all expecting an even bigger field than day 1A for that one, the fields combine tomorrow for the penultimate day.

The European Championships at the Victoria Casino hosts the £500 PLO today and a £1000 No Limit event tomorrow, both at 4.00pm. Just a few tube stops away if you happen to bust early from the WSOPE.
