London's Calling: Fabien Dunlop Leads £1000 WSOPE Final

Barry Carter
fabien dunlop With three bracelets and one November Nine finalists, the performances from visiting UK players at the World Series of Poker this year really made 2009 the year of the Brits. That trend looks set to continue in London, with a fantastic opening event at the WSOPE this year for the UK.

Dunlop Leads £1000 Final
Fabien Dunlop made a fast paced start to the penultimate day and amassed a monster chip lead, at one point looking like running away with it. He took some knocks late on in the day, but still goes into the final table with 538,000, which is more than 200,000 more than his nearest rival. Hot on his heels are Richard Allen and

JP Kelly , with over 300,000 each – the latter you would expect to be a strong contender today, having already captured WSOP gold.

8 UK Players in the Final?
A great day for the UK with 8 of the 9 finalists being based in England. Although not all of them are strictly English, as you often find that a lot of the European pros are now based out of London because their own country has regulatory or huge taxation issues with online poker (FYI – Peter Eastgate and ElkY are both classed as Londoners according to the WSOP press releases). David Roux and Fabien Dunlop are both actually French and Thor Drexel (Who made the English Poker Open final last week) is actually Danish. But good luck to all of them and we will be waving our Union Jack flags just as fast for them today.

Seat 1: Fabien Dunlop -- 538,000
Seat 2: James Tomlin -- 49,000
Seat 3: William Martin -- 122,500
Seat 4: Richard Allen -- 332,000
Seat 5: Anthony Roux -- 88,000
Seat 6: Adnan Alshamah -- 121,000
Seat 7: JP Kelly -- 317,500
Seat 8: Thor Drexel -- 77,000
Seat 9: Neil Suarez -- 217,500

Today's Action
If you are in London today you can go to the Empire to rail the £1000 no limit final, or if you are feeling a little flush, today is the start of the £2500 PLO/PLHE round of each event (Another strong contender for a British bracelet) – both from 12pm.

The European Championships at the Victoria Casino hosts a £500 no limit event today and a £300 PLO competition tomorrow, both at 4.00pm.

Finally, if you fancy a little something different, today is the start of Paul Zimbler's World Record Heads-up Poker Attempt, also at the Empire from 1pm.
